10 Simple Ways to Keep Your Septic System Healthy

Many common septic system problems are avoidable. Make sure you take these simple steps to insure you don't encounter bigger problems down the road.

  1. Have your system pumped regularly. Sounds obvious, but folks forget. Contact Fred Nava & Son to schedule regular service. We'll contact you when it's time to pump the system again.
  2. Keep a record of all inspections, pumping, and repairs. If problems arise in the future, having this information readily available can save you time and money.
  3. Repair all leaks or drips if possible. Excess water going down the drain not only costs you money it can add to the load placed upon your septic system.
  4. Install water-conserving faucets, shower heads, and toilets.
  5. Divert roof drains and surface water away from the septic tank.
  6. DON'T allow anyone to drive or park over any part of the system or put any foundational structures on drain fields or tank.
  7. Avoid flushing foreign substances down your toilet, like pharmaceuticals, flammable or toxic products, harsh cleaners, paint or paint thinner, household pesticides, and chemical drain cleaners.
  8. Avoid using commercial septic tank "additives". These products do not help and some may hurt your system in the long run.
  9. Avoid flushing grease, animal fat, and cooking oil down your kitchen drain. They DO NOT break down in your septic system and typically just clog the pipes leading to it.
  10. Absolutely avoid flushing foreign objects down your toilet like, hair, dental floss, and especially “flushable” baby wipes!
